Lots of ruggers
We set another practice attendance record – 27 boys out there on Thursday. Way to go boys! Great weather and great field too. Coach Hayes will return on Tuesday for practice during break – expect more contact since we went light on contact on Thursday. Bring mouth guards.
Don’t forget rugby is not just for boys – we need some tough girls coming out too. The Sabre girls will practice with us, but group up with other partial girls teams from other schools for games. -Coach Hawk
And Now They Are Ruggers
Fourteen South Meck Students are now Sabre Ruggers due to their brave performance in JV and Varsity games on Saturday at the RAC.
(Front: Ricardo, Connor, Marquis, Justin. Back: Hunter, Robert, Garrett, Raelin, Kevin, Donzavius, Newby, Marcus. In attendance but not pictured: Anthony, Gavin, Roman & Nick)
I am very impressed with the courage, skill and generous teamwork of our Sabre Ruggers. WOW!! – Coach Hawk
Record Attendance
We set a record with 21 kids at practice today!! Rugby is not just more fun if you’re more fit, but also more fun with more ruggers. Keep up the solid recruiting effort. Also, please exercise/run on your own this weekend. – Coach Hawk
Hello Rugby World!!
Welcome to the beginning of South Meck Rugby. Head Coach Cam Hayes and I have the honor and privilege to coach our Sabre boys through our first season of Sabre rugby. If we do it right, the boys will come to love and enjoy rugby as much as we do.
Our story as I know it…
Coach Hayes has been trying to start a High School team at South Meck for a number of years now. The main obstacle was obtaining the required “Faculty Advisor”. Then came Robert…
South Meck was very fortunate this year to get a transfer student, Robert Vaughan, from West Meck. Robert played rugby at WMHS and was determined to continue playing while attending SMHS so he recruited Mr. Matthew Rice (Biology) to be our Faculty Advisor. They found Coach Hayes (and me) to coach… and also recruited Mr. George Beyer (Chemistry) to be our Faculty Advisor.
We are also very fortunate to hold our Tuesday/Thursday practices ON CAMPUS!! Thanks to Mr. Kevin Hinson (AD) and Coach Rocky White (Football Head Coach), for their support for our on-campus practices. It is so much easier on our young ruggers and their families to practice on-campus.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving we also give thanks to the Charlotte Tigers rugby team. They donated a full set of jerseys/shorts/socks to us, in addition to giving us some “South Meck Rugby” t-shirts (they had created a number of years ago when they were just getting started). We appreciate the generosity and hope to pass on the goodwill.
Our team will do all it can to help our young ruggers become great ruggers, great teammates, great students and great young men (not necessarily in that order 🙂 )
