South Meck Rugger Wins Tropical 7s Combine

South Meck traveled to Orlando Florida over spring break to compete in the Tropical 7s tournament.  More information/results on that 2-day tournament will be posted soon, but part of the pre-tourney festivities included a Thursday ‘combine’ for the rugby players.

We are proud to announce that South Meck’s own Jamel McClendon won the combine!  This is Jamel’s first year playing rugby and he is picking up the game fast and uses his skills primarily in the #15/fullback position.  The following picture highlights his results.  Congrats Jamel!!

Two Sabres selected to Represent USA South Rugby Team

A huge shout out and congratulations go to team captain Connor Hayes and Noah Cone who were selected to represent the USA South Panthers u18 and u16 teams (respectively) in the Las Vegas Invitational tournament held March 2 – 4.  The LVI tournament brings teams in from all over the world so this is the best of the best!!

Noah Cone:

Conner Hayes:

Both players have gone through two grueling selection camps in Georgia and their hard work was rewarded as both have made the team.  Connor was only the second South Meck player to be selected to the NC All Stars team back in June and helped bring attention to South Meck HS Rugby and our talented roster of rugby players.  We wish Connor and Noah well as they will be working hard in the next month to prepare to face teams from all over the world in Las Vegas.

WE ARE CURRENTLY HOLDING PRACTICES EVERY TUESDAY & THURSDAY. If you have not been to our practice yet, please visit the practice tab/menu of this website where you can find details on practice locations/times.

“Coach Hawk, can I come out to practice to watch before I commit to joining the team?” YES – come on out to practice to see what we’re all about. Much of our practice is non-contact, but to participate in the contact parts of our practice, you will need paperwork (see Registration tab/menu) signed by your parent/guardian (of course) and a mouth guard (gum shield). Head Coach Hayes and I (and teachers Mr. Rice and Mr. Beyer) strive to foster a very positive environment for all our ruggers and safety is our top priority – you will need to get some contact practices in before playing in a game so come out to our next scheduled practice!!

“Coach Hawk, when are the games?” Please visit our Schedule tab/menu to see upcoming games. In addition to that schedule, we setup scrimmages and actually have a scrimmage this Saturday!!  We’ll be updating the News & Schedule tabs/menus with more details on our scrimmage this weekend.

“Coach Hawk, how can I get my picture on this blog?”  Come to practice this Thursday Jan 29th and I’ll take team photo with my crappy phone and post it here!!

Come out this year to be a Founding Member of the South Meck Rugby Team!!!  Cheers, Coach Hawk

Hello Rugby World!!

Welcome to the beginning of South Meck Rugby.  Head Coach Cam Hayes and I have the honor and privilege to coach our Sabre boys through our first season of Sabre rugby.  If we do it right, the boys will come to love and enjoy rugby as much as we do.

Our story as I know it…

Coach Hayes has been trying to start a High School team at South Meck for a number of years now.  The main obstacle was obtaining the required “Faculty Advisor”.  Then came Robert…

South Meck was very fortunate this year to get a transfer student, Robert Vaughan, from West Meck.  Robert played rugby at WMHS and was determined to continue playing while attending SMHS so he recruited Mr. Matthew Rice (Biology) to be our Faculty Advisor.  They found Coach Hayes (and me) to coach…  and also recruited Mr. George Beyer (Chemistry) to be our Faculty Advisor.

We are also very fortunate to hold our Tuesday/Thursday practices ON CAMPUS!! Thanks to Mr. Kevin Hinson (AD) and Coach Rocky White (Football Head Coach), for their support for our on-campus practices.  It is so much easier on our young ruggers and their families to practice on-campus.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving we also give thanks to the Charlotte Tigers rugby team.  They donated a full set of jerseys/shorts/socks to us, in addition to giving us some “South Meck Rugby” t-shirts (they had created a number of years ago when they were just getting started).  We appreciate the generosity and hope to pass on the goodwill.

Our team will do all it can to help our young ruggers become great ruggers, great teammates, great students and great young men (not necessarily in that order 🙂 )
