1st Official Practice – Saturday Nov 19th

Players & Parents – we will hold our 1st official practice this Saturday, Nov 19 from 1:30pm to 4pm on the football practice field at SMHS.  All players (returning and new) must be registered to attend and must have a mouthpiece (gum shield) and cleats.  https://form.jotform.com/53008864947162

I am very happy to say that we had 25 boys registered for the clinic this past Saturday and many of them were new to South Meck HS Rugby.

It seems there was confusion because the majority of our returning players did not attend the clinic and the feedback was because they thought it was only for new players.  So we expect to see ALL returning players and new players and new recruits this Saturday.  The season begins now!!!  Spread the word and get your teammates there.

Season Kickoff Rugby Clinic

SOUTH MECK HS RUGBY WILL BE HOLDING TWO FREE RUGBY CLINICS:  SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12 (9-12:00 at Practice Field by bus lot) AND November 19 (time/location TBD). THIS CLINIC IS FOR NEW AND RETURNING PLAYERS AND WILL TEACH YOU THE BASICS OF RUGBY.  IF YOU ARE STILL UNDECIDED ABOUT JOINING THE FASTEST GROWING SPORT IN AMERICA, YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY!  THIS IS A COMMITMENT FREE EVENT.  IF YOU DO NOT LIKE RUGBY THEN YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE ANY FURTHER.

HERE ARE JUST A FEW FACTS ABOUT RUGBY

  • RUGBY IS NOW AN OLYMPIC SPORT
  • THERE ARE 10 HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE CHARLOTTE REGION WITH A VARISTY RUGBY TEAM
  • SOUTH MECK’S RECORD FROM THE 2016 SEASON WAS 7-2
  • RUGBY IS THE 2ND MOST ATTENDED SPORT IN THE WORLD
  • ON AVERAGE 0.5 PLAYERS ARE REMOVED FROM THE GAME DUE TO A INJURY, IN AMERICAN FOOTBALL AN AVERAGE OF 1.34 PLAYERS ARE INJURED MAKING RUGBY ALMOST 3X SAFER THAN AMERICAN FOOTBALL!

HOW DO I ATTEND THE EVENT?

TO ATTEND ONE OR BOTH OF THE SOUTH MECK RUGBY CLINICS YOU JUST NEED 3 THINGS! A MOUTH GUARD IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN CONTACT DRILLS, A PAIR OF CLEATS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, AND YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE STEP 1 FROM THE FOLLOWING LINK: HTTP://WWW.SOUTHMECKRUGBY.COM/REGISTRATION/ THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO!  IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, CONTACT COACH BEYER IN O BUILDING IN ROOM 1310, THE HEAD COACH, COACH HAYES AT 919-280-8809 OR JUSTIN HARRIS THE PRESIDENT OF THE RUGBY CLUB AT 704-307-0097.  WE HOPE TO SEE YOU OUT THERE!  – Justin Harris, Club President

Severi Rugby Camp

Severi Camp March 2015Coach Hayes said the Sunday camp was a success and fun. That is great so many of you were able to participate. Here is picture from the day… Also big thanks to Severi Rugby, Coach Richie, and Coach Emilie for coming out to South Meck to train our boys (and Coaches) on Friday!!  Cheers, Coach Hawk

Sabre Rugby Practice Sets Another Record

Congrats Sabres!!  We had 30 students out to practice.  I know some were visiting/watching to see what our rugby team is all about, but we’re including them in the count.  Congrats and let’s keep recruiting.  You guys put in good effort tonight and you make Coach Hayes and me so proud – I might say you guys are inspiring!!

New Players – Keep Calm and Play Rugby!

WE ARE CURRENTLY HOLDING PRACTICES EVERY TUESDAY & THURSDAY. If you have not been to our practice yet, please visit the practice tab/menu of this website where you can find details on practice locations/times.

“Coach Hawk, can I come out to practice to watch before I commit to joining the team?” YES – come on out to practice to see what we’re all about. Much of our practice is non-contact, but to participate in the contact parts of our practice, you will need paperwork (see Registration tab/menu) signed by your parent/guardian (of course) and a mouth guard (gum shield). Head Coach Hayes and I (and teachers Mr. Rice and Mr. Beyer) strive to foster a very positive environment for all our ruggers and safety is our top priority – you will need to get some contact practices in before playing in a game so come out to our next scheduled practice!!

“Coach Hawk, when are the games?” Please visit our Schedule tab/menu to see upcoming games. In addition to that schedule, we setup scrimmages and actually have a scrimmage this Saturday!!  We’ll be updating the News & Schedule tabs/menus with more details on our scrimmage this weekend.

“Coach Hawk, how can I get my picture on this blog?”  Come to practice this Thursday Jan 29th and I’ll take team photo with my crappy phone and post it here!!

Come out this year to be a Founding Member of the South Meck Rugby Team!!!  Cheers, Coach Hawk

Lots of ruggers

We set another practice attendance record – 27 boys out there on Thursday.  Way to go boys! Great weather and great field too.  Coach Hayes will return on Tuesday for practice during break – expect more contact since we went light on contact on Thursday.  Bring mouth guards.

Don’t forget rugby is not just for boys – we need some tough girls coming out too.  The Sabre girls will practice with us, but group up with other partial girls teams from other schools for games.  -Coach Hawk
